Although many new motherboards now incorporate the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 ports, however, there is still a large segment that does not support this standard. Gigabyte recently introduced GC-USB 3.2 GEN2X2 which is the world’s first PCIe expansion card that provides USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C connectivity on any motherboard that supports PCIe x4 interface. And yes, it works on both AMD and Intel platforms.
It is for the first time that we’re seeing PCIe expansion card supporting such speeds ever since the specifications of USB 3.2 standards were made official in 2017. As of now, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 is the fastest USB interface providing transfer speeds up to 20GBps. Compared to thunderbolt, the speeds are still 20GBps slower. However, against the previous generation USB, the bandwidth is twice as fast.
So now you can shop for your next blazing-fast USB 3.2 SSD without having to worry if your motherboard supports the same interface or not. Just hook up the new Gigabyte PCIe USB 3.2 expansion slot into the PCIe x4 slot and you’re good to go. Even if you already own a motherboard with USB 3.2 2×2 slots, you can use this expansion card to add even more high-speed connectivity options.
Since Gigabyte GC-USB 3.2 GEN2X2 is backward compatible, you can also connect previous-generation USB 3.1/3.0/2.0 devices with this PCIe expansion card. But bare in mind that you won’t get 20GBps speeds with those devices. The maximum transfer speeds will be equal to the maximum speed that your device can support.
Pricing and Availability
According to Gigabyte, GC-USB 3.2 GEN2X2 will be an affordable PCIe expansion card. However, there is no word on exact pricing as of now. In terms of availability, Gigabyte says that the first 100 units have already been sold out. The exact date on worldwide availability is not clear yet but you can expect the release very soon.
