Smartphones and other mobile devices have become faster than ever. As technology advances, the devices also require new generation hardware to work seamlessly. To meet the demands of newer technologies such as 5G, advanced AI & ML, LPDDR4x may not be enough. So Micron is bringing the world’s first LPDDR5 DRAM to the industry and Xiaomi Mi 10 will be the first smartphone to feature it. In 2020 only, Micron will mass-produce LPDDR5 globally at a large scale.
Compared to LPDDR4x, LPDDR5 DRAM offers faster data speeds as well as better power efficiency. As of now, Micron is shipping LPDDR5 in three different capacities:
- 6GB LPDDR5
- 8GB LPDDR5
- 12GB LPDDR5
The data processing speeds will vary according to the variant. At maximum, Micron LPDDR5 can support data processing speeds up to 6.4Gbps. Such speeds can be extremely helpful where high-end devices require enough bandwidth to process complex data in real-time. Additionally, it will enable high-end 5G smartphones to run smoothly without any bottlenecks.
Even though LPDDR4x is pretty fast, it can still fall short to handle speeds for advanced machine learning technologies incorporated in newer mobile devices. In comparison, LPDDR5x offers up to 50% faster data access speeds and 20% more efficiency than LPDDR4x DRAM. With such significant improvements, not only the 5G mobile devices will provide blazing fast performance, but also offer longer battery life.
According to Micron, LPDDR5 will be the standard configuration for all the flagship devices in 2020. And in the first half of 2020, LPDDR5 will also be available in a UFS-based multichip package (uMCP5) for mid and high-end smartphones.
LPDDR5 will open doors to new innovations and developments. It offers sufficient data rates and bandwidth that will help to execute a large number of commands almost instantly.
It will be interesting to see the performance gains in the new Xiaomi Mi 10 with the inclusion of Micron LPDDR5 DRAM.
