News » Gadgets » Smartphones » Huawei P40 vs P40 Pro vs P40 Pro+ Specs & Comparison

Huawei recently announced its latest flagship smartphone lineup with the introduction of Huawei P40 5G, P40 Pro 5G, and P40 Pro+ 5G. These are the world’s first smartphones to support an integrated 5G SoC. In this post, we will first take a look at the new features and then move to the comparison of Huawei P40 vs Huawei P40 Pro vs Huawei P40 Pro+ in terms of camera, processor, display (size, refresh rate, bit depth, resolution) GPU, RAM, storage, battery, wireless charging, and more.

(If you’re familiar with the new features, you can scroll down to the bottom of the post to take a look at the comparison of Huawei P40 vs P40 Pro vs P40 Pro+.)

Huawei P40 5G

Processor

Huawei P40 5G is the cheapest smartphone in the new lineup. It hosts the world’s first integrated 5G SoC, Kirin 990 5G chipset. This processor utilizes 7nm+ EUV CPU architecture for high-efficiency operations. To ensure optimal graphics performance, P40 makes use of Mali-G76 MC16 GPU.

Camera Setup

Compared to P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ that uses Leica Quad and Leica Penta Camera system respectively, Huawei P40 incorporates Ultra Vision Leica Triple Camera Lens setup. The three rear cameras include:

  • 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera
  • 16 MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera
  • 8 MP Telephoto Camera

Huawei P40 5G lacks 3D Depth Sensing camera as well as periscopic lens setup which is present in P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ variants.

The 50MP Ultra Vision Camera in the Huawei P40 features 1/1.28 image sensor size and f/1.9 aperture. Its large 2.44 μm pixel size contributes to outstanding low light performance. Also, this 50 MP camera comes with support for 4-in-1 pixel binning as well as Octa PD autofocus. According to Huawei, the new Ultra Vision Leica 50 MP camera in P40 offers 45% better color precision than the predecessor (Huawei P30).

The 16 MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera offers f/2.2 aperture and it allows you to get almost 2.5cm close to the subject for macro photography purposes.

And the 8 MP Telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture in Huawei P40 supports OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and features up to 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x Max Zoom.

Coming to the front camera, P40 incorporates a 32 MP, f/2.0 aperture, IR Camera. It is capable of delivering sharp images in almost any lighting scenario.

Just like Huawei P40 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro+, both front and rear cameras in Huawei P40 support video recording frame rate up to 60 fps at 4k (3840 x 2160) resolution.

Display

Huawei P40 falls short against Huawei P40 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro+ in terms of display size, refresh rate, and screen resolution. All of these variants utilize an OLED panel. While the Pro and Pro+ models feature a 6.58″ display with a 90 Hz refresh rate, Huawei P40 comes in a smaller 6.1″ display size and offers a lower refresh rate of 60 Hz. In addition, P40 also offers a lower screen resolution of 2340 x 1080 than the Pro and Pro+ variants that support 2640 x 1200 resolution.

Battery, Power & Charging

Huawei P40 incorporates a 3800 mAh (Typical) battery that is rated at 3700 mAh. The 22.5W Huawei SuperCharge allows P40 to charge much quicker than most of the smartphones in the market. In comparison, the Pro and Pro+ models offer even quicker charging than P40 which we will talk about in a moment. With the help of Huawei P40 Wireless Charging Case, you can wirelessly charge this smartphone as well. Note that P40 does not support Reverse Charge feature that enables you to charge another phone wirelessly with your phone.

Huawei Golden Snap AI Features

Huawei P40 boasts amazing Golden Snap AI features such as Best Moment, Remove Passerby, & Remove Reflection. The Huawei Golden Snap AI Best Moment feature captures a moving picture and then smartly recommends 1-3 pictures of the best moving moment.

The Huawei Golden Snap AI Remove Passerby feature helps to remove people entering in your frame. However, there are some limitations to this feature. First, it can only remove 2 people from the frame. Second, the removal only works well if the passerby comes from the edges of the frame. So don’t expect the Huawei Golden Snap AI Remove Passerby to work well every time.

Lastly, the HUAWEI Golden Snap AI Remove Reflection feature utilizes AI capability of Gallery Edit to fix reflections by removing the specific layer.

Huawei P40 Pro 5G

Processor

Huawei P40 Pro 5G incorporates the same processor, CPU architecture, and GPU as the P40 and P40 Pro+.

Camera Setup

This is where Huawei P40 Pro takes a significant lead over P40. Instead of a triple camera system as in P40, Huawei P40 Pro boasts Ultra Vision Leica Quad Camera system. It includes a 3D Depth Sensing Camera that helps to calculate the distance of the object from the camera.

While the 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera remains the same in P40 Pro as the P40 except for the fact that it supports OIS.

The 12 MP SuperSensing Telephoto Camera in Huawei P40 Pro offers a higher resolution but lower f/3.4 aperture than Huawei P40. In terms of Zoom, this 12 MP SuperSensing Telephoto Camera can perform up to 5x optical zoom, 10x Hybrid Zoom, & 50x Max Zoom. In comparison, Huawei P40 Pro can offer almost twice the zoom range of P40.

Just like P40 Pro+, Huawei P40 Pro boasts a 40MP Cine Camera with f/1.8 aperture and 1/1.54mm image sensor size. This camera does not support OIS (optical image stabilization). Due to the wide f/1.8 aperture, this 40 MP Cine Camera works exceptionally well under low lighting conditions. Moreover, this camera supports some AI features dedicated especially for video shooting.

Both front and rear cameras in Huawei P40 Pro can shoot 4k video at a frame rate of 60 fps. But unlike P40, the Huawei P40 Pro and Pro+ variants can also shoot lower resolution video at an astounding frame rate of 7680 fps via ultra super slow motion feature.

Display

In comparison to Huawei P40, P40 Pro offers a larger 6.58″ screen size and its OLED panel also features a higher refresh rate of 90 Hz instead of 60 Hz. Huawei P40 Pro offers the same display resolution as P40 Pro+ (2640 x 1200) that is again higher than P40 (2340 x 1080).

Battery, Power & Charging

Supporting a massive 40W charging via Huawei SuperCharge, P40 Pro blows the competition. Note that only P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ offers 40W charging, not the non-Pro P40. The P40 Pro only offers up to 27W charging via Wireless HUAWEI SuperCharge whereas the P40 Pro+ retains the 40W wireless charging capability. Unlike P40, Huawei P40 Pro supports the Reverse Charging feature that is also available in P40 Pro+. For longer runtimes, P40 Pro utilizes a 4200 mAh (Typical) battery rated at 4100 mAh.

AI Features

Huawei P40 Pro also comes with the same amazing Golden Snap AI features such as Best Moment, Remove Passerby, & Remove Reflection.

The flagship Huawei P40 Pro+ 5G incorporates the same processor, CPU architecture, & GPU as the other variants in the P40 lineup.

Camera Setup (Comparison of the Flagship Huawei P40 Pro+ with other P40 Variants)

Huawei P40 Pro+ 5G stands tall with the Ultra Vision Leica Penta Camera setup. The front camera remains the same but the rear camera system boasts some outstanding specifications. While the main 50 MP Ultra Vision camera and the 40 MP Wide-Angle Cine Camera remains the same as P40 Pro, the 8MP SuperZoom camera with f/4.4 aperture and OIS in Huawei P40 Pro+ creates the difference with a massive zoom range.

In comparison, Huawei P40 Pro+ offers up to 100x Max Zoom that is twice the zoom range of the P40 Pro. Additionally, it offers twice the zoom range of P40 Pro in terms of Hybrid Zoom (20x) and Optical Zoom as well. Bear in mind that the Optical Zoom of 10x in Huawei P40 Pro+ works at 240mm focal length whereas, at 80mm, it only offers up to 3x the zoom.

The set of 5 rear cameras in Huawei P40 Pro+ include:

  • Wide Angle – 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera, f/1.9 aperture, OIS
  • Ultra-Wide Angle – 40MP Cine Camera, f/1.8 aperture
  • Telephoto – 8MP MP SuperSensing Camera, f/2.4 aperture, OIS
  • SuperZoom – 8MP, f/4.4 aperture, OIS
  • 3D Depth Sensing Camera

Display

Huawei P40 Pro+ offers the same display size, resolution, refresh rate, and bit depth as the P40 Pro.

Battery, Power and Charging

The flagship P40 Pro+ boasts 40 Watts charging via Huawei SuperCharge. Compared to P40 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro+ features 40W wireless charging as well instead of 27W via Wireless Huawei SuperCharge. P40 Pro+ incorporates the same 4200 mAh (Typical) battery as the P40 Pro that is rated at 4100 mAh.

AI Features

Huawei P40 Pro+ also features the amazing Golden Snap AI features such as Best Moment, Remove Passerby, & Remove Reflection.
